The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) will field Musa Novela as its mayoral candidate for Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality.
EFF announced this on Tuesday just a day before Herman Mashaba vacates this position on Wednesday.
Novela is currently regional chairperson of EFF in Johannesburg since 2013. He has also served as the party's caucus leader in the Johannesburg council since 2016.
He holds a National Diploma in Analytical Chemistry from Tshwane University of Technology and a National Certificate in Local Governance from University of Johannesburg.
The EFF called on its members and councillors in Johannesburg as well as other parties to support the EFF candidate.
Mashaba resigned last month from the mayoral position and has been serving notice all along. He also resigned his membership of the Democratic Alliance (DA).
Last week the DA announced that Funzela Ngobeni, a current member of the mayoral committee, would be its nominee to replace Mashaba as mayor.
EFF leader, Julius Malema, told the media late last week that it was time for his party to govern and for others to support the red berets for a coalition government.
“Anyone that vote with us there, be it the ANC or the DA, will get our support in Tshwane. That is our condition. If we lose we become an opposition, you table a good budget we vote for it, if it is not pro-poor we will not vote for it,” said Malema during a press conference.
The ANC in Johannesburg is yet to put forward a name to contest the position. The City of Johannesburg council will vote for a new mayor on Thursday.
