A senior state prosecutor in the case against Nigerian pastor Timothy Omotoso, Advocate Zukile Mdolomba, has died.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in the Eastern Cape confirmed Mdolomba's death on Sunday, saying he passed away on Saturday morning.
Omotoso remains behind bars while being trialed for rape and human trafficking charges.
The NPA says Mdolomba successfully opposed Omotoso’s bail application in the High Court in Port Elizabeth a few weeks ago.
The court found that the defence had not put forward any exceptional circumstances to warrant granting the Nigerian televangelist bail.
NPA regional spokesperson, Anelisa Ncakani, said Mdolomba played a vital role in the case against Omotoso, especially in the successful opposition of bail.
Ncakani said the NPA is confident that the remaining two prosecutors in the Omotoso case are equally capable of prosecuting the pastor.
