The Premier Soccer League promotion/relegation playoffs took another twist on Tuesday afternoon after Royal AM failed to honour its fixture with Chippa United, despite showing up at the Chatsworth Stadium.
Royal AM has been consistent on its stance about not playing in the playoffs
On Monday, the club maintained it would not play as that would be in contempt of a court interdict. But the made a u-turn hours before kick-off, confirming instead that it was after all going to honour the fixture.
Chippa United players and match officials made their way onto the pitch and observed match procedures. When the referee blew the whistle for the match to commence, there was no sign of Royal AM players and shortly thereafter, he blew it for full-time to confirm Chippa as the winners of the match.
The Chilli Boys walked away with maximum points and three goals courtesy of Royal AM’s no-show.
Reasons behind the Durban-based club’s last-minute change of mind are currently unknown, but the legal battle between them and the PSL is set to continue.
The PSL Disciplinary Committee will decide on the outcome of Tuesday's fixture, but as things stand the Tuesday free victory, Chippa United's second win of the playoffs, puts the side at the top of the log table with six points.
