Orlando Pirates has announced the departure of head coach, Josef Zinnbauer.

Zinnbauer resigned on Monday following Pirates’ early exit from the MTN8 tournament, after being knocked out through a 2-1 defeat by Swallows FC on Saturday.

“I would like to thank the Chairman and management for the opportunity they have given me. Unfortunately, my time at the Club has come to an end,” Zinnbauer told the club’s fans on its website.

“I have enjoyed my time here and would also like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the supporters.

“I have spent the last two years away from my family and for this reason I have decided to hand in my resignation. I would like to wish the Club and its supporters all the best for the future,” he said.

Zinnbauer joined the Buccaneers in December 2019 and that season led the club to a fifth-place finish in the DStv Premiership.

The German also managed to end the club's six-year trophy drought last year by winning the MTN8. He also led the Soweto giants to the quarterfinals of the CAF Confederations Cup.

Zinnbauer leaves Pirates with a record of 35 wins, 20 draws and 13 losses in the 68 matches he's been in charge of.

The club is yet to announce a new coach or a stand-in.

Pirates fans are waiting to see if assistant coaches Mandla Ncikazi - who enjoyed a successful season at Golden Arrows last season - and Fadlu Davids, will be tasked with guiding the Buccaneers, or if a new coach will be appointed soon.
