Police have arrested a 22-year-old man in connection with the murder of a 36-year-old female teacher whose body was found in a flat in Jabulani, Soweto.
The body of Lerato Mosia, a teacher at Mara Primary School, was found in her flat with stab wounds and marks suspected to be of strangulation on Thursday last week.
The suspect was arrested in KwaZulu-Natal and is under police guard in hospital in Greytown after he tried to poison himself.
Gauteng police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, said police acted on a tip-off that led to the arrest.
“Police received information about a woman that might have been killed and locked inside a flat in Jabulani. Police went to the flat and broke the door open. The body of a woman, with a stabbed wound on the upper body was discovered. Investigation led the police to KwaZulu-Natal where the suspect was found in hospital with suspicions that he poisoned himself. The suspect was placed under police guard and will be charged with murder as soon as he recovers,” said Masondo.
This incident occurs amid concerns of rising incidents of gender-based-violence across South Africa.
