North West have confirmed that one person died this afternoon in the violent protests in Lichtenburg near Mahikeng.
Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone, said it’s still not clear whether the person was killed by police or not. He said police have also informed the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) who will then investigate the death.
Residents took to the streets on Friday morning and torched two trucks and a bakkie on the R305 road. The road was closed for traffic for police to monitor the situation.
It is reported that residents are complaining about the ANC candidates list. They also say that they want to be addressed by the new North West premier, Bushy Maape and president Cyril Ramaphosa.
