The late struggle icon, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, is being honoured at the EFF 2021 Local Government Election manifesto launch happening at Ghandi Square in Johannesburg.

Thousands have turned out for the event which the party says reveal not just promises, but plans arrived at following extensive consultation with society.

In the lead-up to the event, the EFF held among others, community meetings, as well as sessions with organised industries including business and labour. Social media was also used in the form of Twitter spaces hosted by party leaders such as Deputy President, Floyd Shivambu.

The EFF, whose leader Julius Malema was close to Madikizela-Mandela, has for some time been advocating for Cape Town International Airport to be named after the struggle icon who was previously married to South Africa's first democratically elected president, Nelson Mandela.

"The EFF commemorates Mama Winnie Madikizela-Mandela by reiterating the call to rename the Cape Town International Airport to Winnie Madikizela-Mandela International Airport.

"Mama Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s name will never be forgotten as long as we are still alive," said the party on its social media platforms.

A last minute attempt by the DA to pressure law enforcement agencies to prevent the EFF from holding a mass gathering was ignored.
