The family of late struggle icon, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela,  has extended gratitude to the EFF saying it has kept her name alive.

The party picked what could have been Madikizela-Mandela's 85th birthday for the launch of its 2021 local government election manifesto in Ghandi Square and also officially opened its new headquarters named after her.

Madikizela-Mandela's daughter, Zenani, said her mother’s name was at risk of being forgotten.

“My family will not forget her immense role in the liberation of our country, South Africa, and refuse to have her name forgotten like so many other women have been,” she said.

Zenani expressed the family’s gratitude to the EFF for honouring Madikizela-Mandela.

“I would like to express how delighted we are as a family that you are naming your headquarters after my mother.  You the EFF have been one of the few to continue remembering, honoring and embracing the memory of my mother, the mother of the nation, which I and my family acknowledge".

EFF President, Julius Malema, said due to the EFF’s influence Mbizana Local Municipality where Madikizela-Mandela hails from in Eastern Cape is now called Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality.

The EFF is expected to make another announcement later today that it termed a surprise.
