The ANC in Gauteng has nominated Mpho Moerane as candidate for Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg. Moerane would be replacing the late mayor, Jolidee Matongo.
Moerane was a Member of the Mayoral Committee for Environment and Infrastructure Services during Matongo’s short lived tenure.
ANC Gauteng Provincial Chairperson, David Makhura, said Moerane was selected by the party’s Provincial Executive Committee (PEC).
"Mpho Moerane has been identified by the REC, PEC and then in accordance with ANC processes on metropolitan municipalities, the National Executive Committee represented by the national officials, have a final say,” he said.
Makhura said three other people were interviewed for the mayoral position.
“The name of Mpho Moerane was among the names of candidates which were interviewed by the national office bearers, the national officials of the ANC, when Jolidee Matongo was appointed candidate and subsequently the mayor,” he said.
Moerane came out second, said Makhura.
The City of Johannesburg will hold a Council meeting on Friday to elect a new mayor.
