Newly elected Executive Mayor of Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality, Khumalo Molefe, has promised to ensure that residents across the district are provided with water as required.

The Mayor, Speaker and Chief Whip of this municipality was elected on Tuesday at the municipal chambers in Mahikeng.

Water scarcity and interruptions for those fortunate enough to have piped water has been a challenge in many parts of the province, including Ngaka Modiri Molema's urban and rural areas.

Molefe said consequence management is the only solution to fix service delivery problems.

“Tomorrow [Wednesday] myself and the mayor of Mahikeng Local Municipality will be visiting a water plant to monitor it, and check why our local taps have brown water. Our duty as political leadership sworn into office today [Tuesday] is to monitor performance of the people we have employed to resolve problems. If there's anybody in the municipality who has been assigned a responsibility and they are not performing it, we can assure you there will be consequence management," he said.

“We have signed a deployment contract with the African National Congress, which says if you fail to perform the responsibility we have assigned to you as a leader we will recall you. So before we get recalled we must hold the administration accountable,” Molefe said.

Nthabiseng Shuping was elected Council Speaker, while Crosby Maema is the new Chief Whip for the municipality.

Meanwhile, the ANC Women's League’s acting secretary in the North West, Bitsa Lenkopane, welcomed the deployment of women in leadership positions.

“The ANC Women’s League in Bokone Bophirima notes the ANC's deployment outcomes to municipalities’ executive leadership across the province. The league pushed and succeeded for the appointment of eight women as Mayors, including two who will be Executive Mayors in district municipalities.

“The league was also successful in pressing for the appointment of twelve women comrades as Speakers and at least ten women Council Whips. In a historic move there are all women troikas at two municipalities. It is an about 47 percent of women deployment, an all-time improvement although less women didn't have the opportunity to contest as ward candidates,” Lenkopane said.
